It has been said that dogs are considered senior when they reach the age of seven.  Some giant breeds actually refer to their dogs as senior when they reach age 5 or 6.  Cardigans are a very hearty and long lived breed so to us, senior is all relative!  Cardigans usually age quite gracefully, many living to be age 14 or more.  At age 7, a Cardigan is barely middle aged.

We do get a quite a number of older dogs in to rescue.  Many of which are passed over due to their age.  These dogs come to us for a variety of reasons which are no fault of their own.  An older dog has many things to offer:

  1. Older dogs have already gone through puppyhood as well as the "terrible twos".  They are housetrained and teething/chewing is not a problem.
  2. Older dogs are who they are.  You know what you are getting whereas a puppy will still have some things in store before they finish maturing.
  3. Older dogs are not as demanding of your time.  They just want to be with you, where ever you are.
  4. Older dogs DO learn new things quickly.  They are ready to join you where ever you may go and are ready to face the world by your side.
  5. Lastly, and most importantly, and older dog is appreciative of having a second chance.  They have been waiting to a part of a family again.

Please do not discount these wonderful dogs!  Life with an older rescue dog could just be a love affair to remember.  The only thing you have to loose is your heart!

Please check back as we will be featuring more senior dogs that have been successfully placed into loving home.

Bungee's Story…

Bungee was turned into rescue in 2004 at the age of 12.  His owner had passed away and a family member surrendered him for placement.  Bungee was adopted by a wonderful woman whom he stayed with until his passing in 2006.  From Bungee's caregiver, Vicki:

"Thank you again so much for letting me be blessed with Bungee in my home. I knew when I adopted him that he was an older dog and that I wouldn't get to be his friend for very long - but it was well worth it! He enriched my life in many positive ways during the short time I had him in my home. I am glad that I was able to give him lots of love during his twilight years - especially since he deserved it!"

Bless you, Bungee and Vicki!
